When should I take my child to the dentist for their first checkup?

We would like to see your child when their first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday. This will help us prevent dental problems.

What's the difference between a Pediatric Dentist and a Family Dentist?

A pediatric dentist specializes in treating children only, and has an additional two to three years of specialty training following dental school. Pediatric Dentists and their staff are trained and equipped to care for children with special physical and mental health needs.

Are baby teeth important?

“Baby” or primary teeth are important because they help children chew naturally, speak clearly, and also help form a path for the permanent teeth to follow when they are ready to erupt.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?

The first step is to have your child gently swish warm salt water around the irritated area. Then place a cold compress on their face if it is swollen. If their doctor allows for it, give them the recommended dosage of childrens’ acetaminophen (ex. Children’s Tylenol). Lastly, make an appointment with us as soon as possible.

Is thumb sucking bad for my child's teeth?

If your child is still sucking their thumbs or fingers past the age of three, a mouth appliance may be recommended by our pediatric dentists.

How often should I take my child to the dentist?

In order to prevent cavities and other dental problems, we recommend that you bring your child for a check-up every six months.

How do dental sealants work?

Dental sealants fill in the crevasses and small cracks on the surfaces of the teeth. This keeps out the cavity causing food particles and bacteria.

What should I do if my child chips a permanent tooth?

The most important thing is to stay calm. If your child has any injuries to the soft tissues of their mouth, apply an ice pack and determine whether immediate care is necessary. Make an appointment with us as soon as possible and we will review your options with you and your child.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

As with a chipped tooth, it is important to stay calm. Find the tooth, and hold it by the crown rather than the root. If possible, try to insert it back into the socket. If that isn’t possible, place the tooth in a glass of milk and bring your child immediately to see us.
